Spiritual Tower
In North America many churches studiously avoid any kind of architecture that celebrates the faith which inspired the building. In protestant churches there is a fear of becoming too “catholic”. But this church spire does a nice job of providing some kind of architectural beauty which draws attention to the edifice. While it’s true that the Bible tells us to avoid worshipping idols an uplifting tower such as this serves to raise our spirits and draw us in.
Classic Thunderbird
It all begins with an idea.
I’m not really a car guy per se. But there are a few exceptions to be made for old T-Birds, 57 Chevy’s and other objects of nostalgia. Walking through my neighborhood it’s amazing how often you find a really remarkable car parked on the street. In the right lighting, around sunset, some of them demand that photos be created that celebrate the times that were.
Aztec House
Aztec House
In most suburban neighborhoods an oppressive sameness characterizes most of the homes and properties. The goal seems to be avoiding attention rather than making a statement. But in this case I was delighted to find this one location I called “The Aztec House” which wasn’t afraid to make a stylistic proclamation of its individuality. This gate covered the entrance to the front yard from the sidewalk as if to say “we’re different”.

Somehow I’m still attracted to the idea of presenting sequential images as short films with or without audio. Maybe it dates back to my first job in the early 70s producing slide shows for a corporation. But more than that still image films can be seen as a celebration of photography that also tells a story. I won’t go so far as to say that the sum of the images is greater than the individual photos but it does show the versatility of photography to be used as a building block of pictures that present a message of some kind. Indeed the aesthetics of setting up image sequences adds power to the individual images compared to viewing them solo. More on this later.
